- DIED. William Ball, 60, award-winning director and founder of
- the American Conservatory Theater; in Los Angeles. Launched in
- 1965 in Pittsburgh and moved to San Francisco in 1967, A.C.T.
- has earned a reputation as one of the nation's most creative
- nonprofit theaters. Ball's repertory performances and advanced
- training techniques nurtured actors' flamboyance through a
- variety of physical gestures, from boisterous laughter to
- karate. Among the plays he directed were Tartuffe, Under Milk
- Wood and Tiny Alice.
